What Care We Offer

Marymount hospital provides accommodation for up to 63 older adults. It caters primarily for adults who require continuing care: however, it also provides 4 private respite/convalescence care beds and up to 6 palliative care support beds for those with intermediate palliative care needs.

The centre provides 24-hour nursing care. There is a Medical Officer on site Monday to Friday and physiotherapy is available 37hrs/week. The centre has a highly skilled workforce, and further education and development is actively promoted among all staff through the onsite education centre.

The multidisciplinary team provides a holistic approach to care. We aim to support and develop the on-going interaction between the residents and their families and between families and the staff of the hospital. All care is rendered in a professional manner, in an atmosphere of respect, warmth and friendship. We are in constant revision of our practices and procedures in accordance with international best practice so that we continue to improve the service and care that we offer our residents.

Continuing Care

Marymount aims to provide the highest quality of continuing care for those who can no longer manage at home. People may come to continuing care for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • It offers safety, security, and peace of mind.
  • Family and community services can no longer meet the person’s needs.
  • It provides more opportunities for socialisation & activities.
  • It offers a specialist suite of healthcare professionals to promote optimal wellbeing.

Marymount provides 45 private beds and 8 semi-private beds for continuing care.

Admissions to continuing care beds are made in accordance with the Nursing Home Support Scheme (NHSS/ ‘Fair Deal’) or by private funding and Marymount.

Marymount operates a waiting list for continuing care beds. Persons applying for the Nursing Home Support Scheme (FairDeal) must have submitted their application to that office to go on the waiting list. Once you have been assigned a Client ID number you are welcome to contact Marymount to discuss putting your name on the list for continuing care.

Applications for continuing care are made through the Assistant Director of Nursing in the Service for Older People.

Understandably, the move to continuing care is a major decision that may cause some uncertainty or apprehension. We are very happy to discuss your options and provide further information on our service. Please contact us to arrange a telephone call or viewing of our facility.

Palliative Care Support

Palliative Care Support (PCS) beds are provided within Marymount’s Service for Older People for persons with life limiting illness who have care needs but do not require specialist palliative care. The Community Palliative Care team may be involved in the care of these patients/residents when appropriate.  There are 5 beds available for Palliative Care Support admissions.  There is 1 bed available for short term Community Palliative Care Support Respite.

Referrals are made via the person’s Specialist Palliative Care Consultant, in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary team.

Respite Care / Convalescence Care

Marymount provides 4 beds for private respite/convalescence care admissions within the Service for Older People.

Respite care is a service for carers. It aims to give carers time for themselves, for their own lives, in the knowledge that the person they normally care for is safe and being cared for in a recognised place of care.

Convalescence care provides the necessary care and support needed to rest, recover and rehabilitate for people who have received hospital treatment following surgery or an acute illness.

These are planned short-term admissions, the duration of which can be 2-10 weeks. A weekly bed fee applies to these beds. Private Respite/convalescence admissions are organised and planned by the nursing administration team in Marymount University Hospital. A letter of welcome plus a list of necessary requirements is issued from Marymount to all respite admissions, ideally at least two weeks before the admission date. Residents and/or families are welcome to visit prior to admission, if desired. Respite admissions will be in a shared bedroom (4 beds per room, gender specific).
