Practice Development

Practice Development in nursing uses a framework of quality assurance, person-centred care delivery underpinned by striving towards excellence in clinical skills. The department facilitates and encourage staff to continually develop and refresh clinical skills to advance practice and promote high quality patient focused care. Staff are supported to create and take ownership of change and quality improvement initiatives with patient/resident care at its heart.  From a comprehensive induction process for all new staff, support for those newly qualified and those returning from a career break to provision of training in clinical skills and clinical audit and a warm, supportive welcome for all new members of the Marymount team.

Clinical Placement Coordination for University College Cork are facilitated by Practice Development via Brookfield Health Science Complex schools of nursing, medicine and allied health disciplines within the university. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged and supported in all in-patient clinical areas and in the community setting, providing optimum learning environments and meeting the learning objectives set by the third level institutes.

Monitoring of Blood Transfusion safety and appropriate use of blood products is facilitated within a Haemovigilance role for Practice Development. We ensure that any blood transfusion products used for patients are administered safely and within best practice guidance, compliance with EU directives and national standards.

Leading Clinical Audit, Practice Development oversees MDT clinical audit activity, measuring all aspects of care delivered to measure compliance against international, national or local best practice guidance.

Clinical documentation and the development of clinical policies, procedures and guidelines is undertaken within Practice Development, to underpin evidence-based practice and maintain the high standards of care that the hospital is well known for. All of this is conducted within a culture of training, continuous professional and personal development, and delivery of quality, evidence-based care.
