VENUE:
Blended Learning – Online and at the Education Centre, Marymount University Hospital & Hospice, and/or UCC.
OUTLINE:
This module will provide participants with the opportunity to deepen learning and application of theory in psychosocial and spiritual care, develop relational empathic sills and demonstrate critical reflective practice in psychosocial and spiritual care in palliative care. As an inter-disciplinary module, participants will gain a deeper awareness of the integrated approach of the wider healthcare team in palliative care alongside a development of psychosocial and spiritual awareness appropriate to the particular healthcare discipline of each participant. This module will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to attend to the generalist level psychosocial and spiritual issues of patients and their families in palliative care. The module will also focus on deepening appreciation and practice of restorative self-reflection and self-care of the professional in palliative care when caring for patients and families facing a life-limiting illness.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Explain the evidence base for psychosocial and spiritual care in palliative care.
- Differentiate between generalist and specialist psychosocial and spiritual care and intervention in palliative care.
- Demonstrate an understanding of family systems theory as appropriate to palliative care.
- Demonstrate ability to self-reflect on psychosocial and spiritual resources, challenges and approaches as a healthcare professional.
- Reflect on the psychosocial and spiritual experiences of the dying process.
- Demonstrate competence in relational compassionate presence appropriate to discipline.
- Create psychosocial and spiritual care plans appropriate to role in palliative care.
